Mountain View, CA — TurboLinux, Inc., the high-performance Linux company, and SGI, known worldwide for providing a broad range of high-performance computing and advanced graphics solutions, announced an agreement to incorporate SGI’s breakthrough SGI Pro64 compiler technology into TurboLinux’s forthcoming commercial release of TurboLinux for IA-64, for substantially increased IA-64 performance on Linux.
TurboLinux is also planning to ship the SGI Pro64 compiler as a key component of TurboLinux for IA-64 for use by developers to boost performance of applications running on the Intel Itanium platform.
The announcement comes a day before the opening of LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, which runs Tuesday through Thursday in San Jose, Calif.
“We believe SGI’s compiler technology will play a significant role in making enterprise-ready Linux solutions available on IA-64,” said Ly Pham, executive vice president of Worldwide Development, TurboLinux. “With its sophisticated compiler suite, SGI has proven to be a leading player in the effort to create a Linux port for IA-64 that would be available to our customers and the open source community at or before the Itanium processor launch.”
“We are excited that TurboLinux is adopting our high-performance SGI Pro64 compilers,” said Jan Silverman, vice president of Advanced Systems Marketing, SGI. “This is an important example of how SGI and TurboLinux will work together to ensure success of IA-64 Linux.”
TurboLinux, the first company to make an IA-64 Linux distribution available to developers last March, recently announced the fifth upgrade of its TurboLinux for IA-64 developer’s release operating system.
The TurboLinux IA-64 release is based on the kernel and tools developed by the IA-64 Linux Project, formerly known as the Trillian project. Companies represented include TurboLinux, SGI, Caldera Systems, CERN, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Red Hat, SuSE, Linuxcare, NEC, and VA Linux. The commercial release of IA-64 Linux offerings from TurboLinux will coincide with Intel’s general release of IA-64 Itanium processor-based platforms. The current TurboLinux for IA-64 developer’s release, codenamed “Firecracker,” is available for download at ftp.turbolinux.com/pub/ia64. Guidelines and resources for developers working on IA-64 are available at http://frontier.turbolinux.com/ia64 .
Fortran 90, C and C++ compilers from SGI use the company’s code generators, designed to produce performance enhancements in both compute- and data-intensive applications. The latest information and updates for the SGI Pro64 compilers can be found at http://oss.sgi.com/projects/Pro64 . The compiler source, released to the Linux developer community under standard GPL licensing, is fully compatible with the gcc and g++ offerings and contains:
