NEWS BRIEFS
San Jose, CA — NARUS, Inc., a leading provider of Internet Business Infrastructure (IBI) solutions will demonstrate the industry’s first wire-speed, revenue-grade IBI solution for high-speed optical networks using the Intel Internet Exchange architecture (IXA). The demonstration, which will take place during a keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum here by Mark Christensen, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Network Communications Group, will highlight real-time, wire-speed collection and processing of customer and service usage data in a high-speed optical network with no impact on network performance.
“By integrating Intel’s optical processing capabilities with an Intel Pentium III Xeon based system, NARUS is able to offer a unique platform for new world service providers,” said Tony Stelliga, general manager of Intel’s Optical Processor Organization. “NARUS’ IBI solutions provide service providers with the data they need to better serve their customers, to define new services, to manage those services, and to capture value through usage-based billing models.”
The Intel Internet Exchange architecture is a framework for designing powerful and flexible networking and telecommunications equipment using reprogrammable silicon. The Intel Internet Exchange architecture allows systems designers to add network functionality quickly and cost effectively. It consists of a portfolio of silicon components including the IXP1200 network processor and embedded versions of the Pentium II, Pentium III and Celeron processors.
“Clearly, the Intel Internet Exchange architecture is a key component in meeting the growing demands of next generation networks,” said Richard Kagan, NARUS’ vice president of marketing. “Its open development environment enables a scalable and reliable product that delivers a networking solution ready for leading edge applications, users, standards and bandwidth requirements. The combination of IXA and NARUS’ IBI solutions provides IP service providers with the essential business infrastructure that they need to win. The combined solution enables them to monitor and react to the actual quality of their users’ experience in real time, to provide proactive customer care, to dynamically re-provision their networks, and to capture value for differentiated services.”
The demonstration being performed at the Intel Developers Forum highlights the ability of NARUS’ IXA-powered IBI solution to capture real-time, application level service information directly from a high-speed optical network, with no impact on network performance. A series of video clips will be streamed to a laptop PC from a video server over an OC-12 optical connection. The optical fiber is fitted with an optical “T” junction, enabling a NARUS Analyzer to be connected to the fiber link via an Intel GigaBlade Accelerator card. The Analyzer will passively monitor the video streaming sessions, enabling the Quality of Service (QoS) for each video session to be measured and displayed in real time, and also enabling a bill to be generated immediately after each streaming session ends. For the final video clip, the bandwidth available for the video will be reduced, and an alarm will be generated when the picture quality drops below a critical level. The final bill, which will be generated immediately after the video finishes, will show a corresponding refund to the customer.
The NARUS applications are based on the NARUS IBI platform, which gathers detailed network usage information directly from high-speed, carrier-grade IP networks, as well as from other sources, and makes that information available to applications from NARUS and third parties. A growing number of NARUS Solutions Partners are integrating their applications with the NARUS IBI platform, adding comprehensive, real-time usage data to their billing, customer care, fraud detection, churn management and other key operational and business support system (OSS/BSS) applications.
IBI applications from NARUS include NARUS Intelligence, a web-based decision support solution that provides comprehensive reports on customers and service usage, and the NARUS Billing Mediation System (BMS), which enables key customer care and billing applications with accurate usage information, in real time and supports value-based business models for digital content distribution, web commerce, application hosting, messaging services, and many others.
