TRG PLANS INITIATIVE TO DELIVER AN OPERATING SYSTEM

Orem, UTAH — Timpanogas Research Group, Inc. located in Orem, Utah is pleased to announce an Open Source Initiative to deliver an Open Source NetWare Compatible Operating System to Novell Customers 2H 2001. TRG’s Open Source NetWare compatible Operating System, dubbed MANOS (Metropolitan Area Network Operating System) is based on a NetWare-like SMP kernel written by the authors of Novell’s NetWare SMP operating System and Wolf Mountain Operating System, Jeff Merkey and Darren Major. MANOS contains a fully integrated kernel-level source level debugger and the ability to load and use Microsoft Windows 2000 Portable Executable and Dynamic Link Library (DLL) formats. MANOS is not slated to support Novell’s legacy NLMs, but is being enabled for full wire-compatibility with Novell’s NCP client protocols and an Open Source NDS clone.

“TRG wanted to release our open source NDS last year, but we had to wait for the expiration of the RSA Public/Private Key patents on September 20, 2000, since Novell’s NDS is heavily dependent on PKI for security and authentication. With the expiration of these key patents, providing a fully wire-compatible NetWare NOS replacement can now become a reality. We are currently taking the best of Linux and incorporating Linus Torvald’s outstanding work into MANOS to create the world’s first Open Source NetWare-like NOS. Our intent is to support existing Linux applications and drivers on an optimized NOS kernel that provides comparable performance metrics to today’s NetWare product line,” stated Jeff Merkey, CEO of TRG. TRG has posted the kernel and source code for the MANOS kernel at http://www.timpanogas.com and ftp at 207.109.151.240. The current open source contains the base kernel and loader only. TRG and a small group of Open Source developers are integrating the Linux Network and Disk Drivers and Linux execution environment onto MANOS. MANOS is a work in progress, and is slated for first release on 2H of 2001.

MAXOPTIX LAUNCHES DVD-RAM LIBRARIES

Fremont, CA — Maxoptix Corporation ( http://www.maxoptix.com ), a leader in optical data-storage technology, introduced two DVD-RAM libraries, marking the company’s entrance into this market. The Maxoptix DVD520 and DVD540 are the only DVD-RAM jukeboxes in the industry designed specifically to meet the random-access requirements of DVD-RAM – and the only jukeboxes that can use the standard DVD cartridges approved and recommended by the DVD Forum. (All other DVD-RAM libraries are adaptations of products originally designed for CDs – and can handle only single-sided bare media.) The DVD520 and DVD540 jukeboxes provide a cost-per-gigabyte comparable to tape, with much faster access – and a ruggedness and archivability comparable to magneto-optical (MO).

“The DVD520 and DVD540 provide excellent media durability, because they use standard DVD-RAM cartridges,” said Dave Kalstrom, Maxoptix vice president of sales and marketing. “Since the media is never touched by human hands, it cannot be contaminated by dust or from handling. Over time, repeated handling of unprotected rewritable media can cause significant contamination. Fingerprints are especially problematic, because they degrade the signal level reaching the disc’s recording layer. Cartridged media completely eliminates this problem. Media cost is also a concern with libraries. Maxoptix jukeboxes use standard double-sided cartridges, which cost about half as much as the media used by competitive units. This can result in cost savings of several hundred dollars per jukebox.” The DVD520 and DVD540 use 5.2GB double-sided (2.6GB per side) DVD-RAM cartridges. This gives the 20-cartridge DVD520 a capacity of 104GB and the 40-cartridge DVD540 a capacity of 208GB. The jukeboxes feature a flipping mechanism to take advantage of the storage capacity on both sides of the discs, and are available with one or two drives.

SUN PRESENTS PORTING KIT FOR LINUX DRIVERS

Palo Alto, CA — Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced it is making the Solaris Operating Environment Network Driver Porting Kit for Linux Drivers available free of charge. This kit, the latest in a series of free tools and services Sun offers for driver development, provides scripts and guidelines to let developers convert PCI-based Linux driver source into a binary Solaris driver for the Intel platform. The kit is another example of Sun’s commitment to the growing number of Solaris Operating Environment independent hardware vendors (IHVs), and to the Intel market. IHVs who have written Linux drivers for Fast Ethernet, FDDI, Gigabit Ethernet, or Token Ring devices can now leverage that work by using the kit to create the corresponding binary network drivers for Solaris Operating Environment.

“This kit provides a faster way to develop Solaris Operating Environment network drivers without compromising quality, reducing development time by 80% or more,” said Andrew Ingram, Vice President of Solaris Software Marketing for Sun’s Solaris Systems Group. “It’s almost as though every time the IHV writes a Linux network driver, he gets two drivers instead of one: one Solaris and one Linux. On top of that, IHVs and other commercial developers can validate the quality of a driver created using this kit by verifying it through our Solaris Device-Driver Verification Program, so customers will know the driver has passed verification tests developed by Sun.” Demand for peripherals with the Solaris Operating Environment drivers continues to grow with the using installed base resulting from the Free Solaris program. Customers ordering Free Solaris media kits report almost 250,000 installations completed or planned short-term on the Intel platform since the program began in March. Almost 150,000 of these installations were by new users – all customers needing devices with Solaris Operating Environment support.

Raleigh, N.C. — Molecular Mining Corporation is pleased to announce the completion of its web site redesign project, which will facilitate the launch of the Company’s new business initiatives. CEO Evan Steeg, Ph.D., said, “I am proud to say that we are on target in all regards. The next segment of this development phase, downloadable Shockwave demo movies and free trial copies of our software, will be online soon, giving our potential users and business partners quick access to overviews of our technology and hands-on time with our software offerings.” “The site offers a registration option to allow access to Free trial downloads of our software, a chance to participate in creating new software products and discounts on workshop attendance,” Steeg continued, “We hope to become a valuable part of the daily work of the increasing number of scientists that have to draw information from high-throughput gene expression, proteomics, SNPs, toxicology and structure-activity measurements, in other words the next generation of molecular biology methods.”

Along with these features, the web site also has links to data set evaluations conducted by MMC’s senior scientists and a link to a recent Scientific American article about bioinformatics. In the future, scientific papers will be downloadable to users who register at the site. Molecular Mining Corporation (MMC) was founded in 1999. After initial funding and incorporation in 1999, MMC is poised to launch a line of exploratory, inference and prediction-based data mining software products into the bioinformatics market. The company has recently launched MMC Custom Network. This business unit’s mission is to build partnerships, which provide a high degree of customization with a pharma, biotech or genomics partner. These partnerships may center around exploring, modeling and generating predictions on molecular networks and particular disease pathways, or using MMC’s unique technology to crack the huge combinatorial barriers to finding and exploiting the most valuable correlative relationships between SNPs and disease susceptibility, drug response and environmental factors.

SYBASE RELEASES SOURCE CODE FOR COMPILERS

Emeryville, CA — Sybase, Inc. announced that it plans to release the source code for the Sybase Watcom C/C++ and Watcom Fortran compilers under an Open Source license agreement. This move is designed to allow existing customers to continue to evolve the Watcom compiler products for their own use. “We’ve had tremendous interest from our customers in Open Source versions of our Watcom compiler products,” said Rob Veitch, director of Business Development, Sybase, Inc. “Sybase feels that leveraging the tremendous talent pool in the Open Source community is the best way to enable customers to continue to support and evolve these products into the future.”

Sybase has selected SciTech Software, Inc. as the official maintainer of the Watcom compiler source code, which is planned to be released under the “Open Watcom” moniker. SciTech was selected due to its heavy use of Watcom products, its extensive cross platform experience and its record of Open Source involvement; SciTech released its commercial SciTech MGL graphics library to the Open Source community in 1997. Among its duties as official maintainer, SciTech will manage the Open Watcom web site (http://www.openwatcom.org), which will host the project source code, bug tracking database, developer discussion groups, and official binaries for free download. SciTech will also be heavily involved in the continued development of Open Watcom products. “SciTech is a long time user of Watcom products and considers them among the best compilers around,” said Kendall Bennett, Director of Engineering at SciTech Software, Inc. “We are ecstatic to be involved in a project that breathes new life into such awesome products and harnesses the creative energies of the entire ‘Net community to enhance them into the future.” Visit http://www.sybase.com for more information.

QUANTUM/ATL AND ATTO ANNOUNCE FIBRE CHANNEL

Irvine, CA — Quantum/ATL, an element of Quantum’s DLT and Storage Systems Group and a leading supplier of intelligent DLTtape automation for networked computers, and ATTO Technology Inc., a worldwide manufacturer of Fibre Channel and SCSI storage connectivity solutions, Wednesday announced the Prism FC230, a second-generation Fibre Channel-to-SCSI router integrated into ATL’s new high- performance, intelligent tape libraries being shipped in 2000. The new product is part of ATL’s Prism Storage Architecture, a standard feature of ATL’s P-Series libraries that enables easy addition of system connectivity and feature options. The new solution provides universal connectivity to storage that is not server/platform centric and offers massive scalability by leveraging networking infrastructures. Support for Fibre Channel loop or fabric environments provides a simpler method for connecting servers to ATL’s P3000 and the newly announced P2000 enterprise libraries.

Using the new Prism Fibre Channel option avoids the need for large volumes of data to be transmitted at much slower speeds over the local area network. The new router connects to any kind of Fibre Channel topology: point-to-point, arbitrated loop or switched fabric. “Prism Storage Architecture allows ATL customers to keep pace with evolving Fibre Channel technology by simply installing the FC230, which will allow them to cost-effectively improve the overall performance and scalability of their libraries over time,” said Neal Waddington, chief operating officer of ATL. “By integrating our new Fibre Channel technology, ATL customers will have a Fibre Channel router that is tightly coupled within the internal library architecture,” said Timothy Klein, president and CEO of ATTO. “This allows the Prism FC230 to take part in high availability features while sharing a consolidated user interface and network management system with the rest of the library.”

INTRUSION.COM UNVEILS GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE

Additional enhancements include improved scalability; increased agent-to-manager performance for Sun Solaris and Windows NT agents; and increased database performance. Expanded agent support now includes ISS RealSecure and Cisco Secure IDS to enable centralized intrusion detection management, and round out the software’s multi-vendor monitoring capabilities.

“With the gigabytes of data generated by each security agent, managing and securing the network environment has become increasingly complex and time-consuming for in-demand security professionals,” said Billy Austin, vice president of sales and marketing for Intrusion.com. “Kane Secure Enterprise, with its advanced GUI and performance improvements, increases staff efficiencies, enables deeper security system analysis, and makes daily evaluation and assessment reviews easy – even for the largest enterprise with thousands of users.” Kane Secure Enterprise is a sophisticated security management system that runs on Windows NT. It integrates audit and event data from a variety of sources including Windows NT and Solaris servers and desktops, Cisco IOS routers, Check Point FireWall-1, ISS RealSecure and Cisco Secure IDS intrusion detection systems. An innovative feature of Kane Secure Enterprise is its advanced behavioral profiling that enables security administrators to follow the activity, usage and behavioral patterns of individual users. The program builds a behavioral profile of each user, and tracks them across categories such as login-logoff times, applications executed, use of administrative rights, and more.
