SGI APPOINTS IZUMI SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT

Mountain View, CALIF. — SGI announced that Norio Izumi, president of SGI Japan, has been appointed senior vice president of SGI. He will report directly to Kenneth Coleman, executive vice president of SGI. Izumi is responsible for all the company’s Japan-based operations, including direct sales, partner sales, marketing, customer support, systems integration, administration and planning. “SGI has recognized the strategic importance of the Japanese market, and Izumi’s leadership has invigorated our business there tremendously,” said Coleman. “His solid management experience and demonstrated leadership will power SGI to a new stage of market success in Japan and will help enhance SGI’s reputation overall as a global technology leader.”

Izumi joined SGI in 1998 as president of SGI Japan, where he immediately made an impact by implementing a successful new business model for the Japanese organization. “I am looking forward to helping SGI build an industry-leading organization in Japan,” Izumi said. “By cooperating with Mountain View, SGI Japan can go to market with differentiated capabilities on our MIPS processor-based computers running IRIX and capture new market opportunities with Intel in both the Windows NT and the Linux operating system space.” Prior to joining SGI, Izumi was executive vice president and general manager of the sales division of Compaq Computer Japan, where he played a key role in the successful merger between Compaq and Tandem Computers. Prior to that merger, Izumi was vice president of Tandem and senior executive managing director of the sales division of Tandem Japan. Previously, Izumi was manager of the retail industry business division of IBM Japan.

EARLE LEAVES HEWLETT-PACKARD

New York, N.Y. — Hewlett-Packard Co. confirmed that one of its top executives, Nick Earle, is leaving the company after 18 years. HP declined to say exactly where Earle is going, but said he is returning home to the U.K. to run European operations for an HP partner. That partner is expected to make an announcement next month. Earle was one of a handful of executives who designed HP’s e-business strategy before CEO Carly Fiorina joined HP in July 1999. He and Ann Livermore presided over HP’s now famous E-services launch in May 1999, when the company unveiled its E-speak software and claimed to have an e-business strategy.

Even though HP’s strategy continues to evolve, Earle almost single-handedly gave HP a public image as an e-business company. An entertaining and quick-witted speaker, he leaked tidbits of information to the press, negotiated deals with Internet startups in which HP gave away hardware in exchange for equity, and took potshots at HP’s competition in the style of Sun CEO Scott McNealy. “Scott McNealy shows up and says, ‘How many [Starfire servers] do you want to buy?’ And HP says, ‘How can we build a business together?'” he said last year after Sun announced that it was taking back the responsibility for servicing dot-coms from its resellers because they couldn’t move fast enough. In the last few months Earle has been less visible than Livermore, who is now president of HP’s enterprise and commercial business and a member of Fiorina’s executive council. Shortly after she joined the company, Fiorina named Earle chief marketing officer and asked him to handle marketing for all of HP. In November Earle formed and became president of a cross-company E-services.Solutions organization to figure out exactly how HP would approach e-business. Rich Raimondi, the chief operating officer of that organization, temporarily is replacing Earle. Raimondi presided over HP’s e-services printing and imaging launch in May and has been with HP since 1979.

TURBOLINUX NAMES PANDEY GM FOR ASIA-PACIFIC

San Francisco, CA — TurboLinux, Inc., the high-performance Linux company, announced the appointment of Ashok Pandey to the new position of general manager and president of the company’s Asia Pacific operations. Pandey joined TurboLinux from Compaq where he was general manager for Northern China. Pandey brings more than 15 years of senior IT experience in general management, business development, sales and marketing in the Asia-Pacific market. He will oversee the company’s operations in China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan.

Prior to joining TurboLinux, Pandey managed all business activities for the combined Compaq, Tandem and DEC operations in Northern China and established strategic relationships with some of China’s largest government agencies, including the Ministry of Post and Telecom and the Ministry of Railways. Pandey earlier was a senior executive with Tandem and held marketing and sales positions with Bull S.A. and Dassault A.T. “Pandey has a proven record in building sales, marketing and services businesses to deliver enterprise computing solutions in the Asia-Pacific market,” said T. Paul Thomas, president and CEO of TurboLinux. “His strategic experience, government knowledge and deep understanding of customer needs in China will be invaluable in helping TurboLinux grow its leadership position in the fastest-growing information technology market in the world.”

PHARMACOPEIA ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT PROMOTIONS

San Diego, CA — Pharmacopeia, Inc. announced the promotions of Michael Stapleton, Ph.D. to the newly created position of Executive Vice President, Software Operations; Stephen D. Herbert to the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales; and Judith M. Ohrn to Vice President, Human Resources. All promotions are effective immediately. In his new role, Dr. Stapleton takes responsibility for all commercial software research and development, marketing, and support for Pharmacopeia’s wholly owned subsidiaries Molecular Simulations Inc. (MSI) and Synopsys Scientific Systems (Synopsys), as well as for the software subsidiaries of Oxford Molecular Group upon shareholder approval and the successful completion of that acquisition. Dr. Stapleton’s new role includes the management of software for bioinformatics, cheminformatics, life science simulation and modeling, and materials science simulation and informatics. During his ten years with the company, Dr. Stapleton has served as Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, and most recently as General Manager of the Materials Science Business Unit. Dr. Stapleton earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Southampton University in the United Kingdom and did post-doctoral research in computational chemistry at the School of Chemical Engineering at Cornell University. Prior to joining Pharmacopeia, he worked at British Petroleum Research in the UK.

As Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Mr. Herbert expands his Life Sciences sales responsibilities to include the sales of all Materials Science software products & services. Mr. Herbert has more than 18 years experience in software sales and marketing and 10 years with Pharmacopeia. A Vice President with the company since 1993, Mr. Herbert holds a B.A. with honors specializing in Biochemistry from the University of York and a graduate certificate in Administration & Management from Harvard University. Since 1988 he has served in various executive positions in high technology companies including Computervision and Cambridge Interactive Systems. In her new role as Vice President, Human Resources, Ms. Ohrn is responsible for overall corporate efforts in recruitment, training and development, compensation and benefits, and employee relations. Judy will also play a key role during the integration process of Oxford Molecular Group’s software subsidiaries and other future acquisitions. Ms. Ohrn has over 15 years of experience in the field of human resource management and has spent a significant amount of her career staffing and developing organizations for emerging high technology companies. She began her career with the specialty retail division of General Mills and held management positions with both a prominent human resource consulting firm and a publicly traded software company prior to joining Pharmacopeia in 1993. She holds a BS in Finance and Marketing from Babson College in Wellesley, MA.

HEAD OF PC PROCESSOR UNIT LEAVES AMD

San Diego, CA — Advanced Micro Devices said that Larry Hollatz, who oversaw PC processor operations, has left the company. Hollatz, whose official title was group vice president of AMD’s computation products unit, will be replaced on an interim basis by AMD’s president, Hector Ruiz. Hollatz oversaw processor design operations in Texas and California, as well as the sales effort for AMD’s PC chips. “I look forward to working directly with the leaders of the computation products group,” Ruiz said in a statement. “PC processors represent our greatest growth opportunity.” AMD would not say what Hollatz will do next, only stating that he is leaving to pursue other interests. Hollatz declined to comment on the matter.

Ruiz joined AMD from Motorola earlier this year, becoming the No. 2 man behind chief executive Jerry Sanders. Ruiz is the likely successor to Sanders, whose contract expires next year at the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company. Hollatz had been with AMD since 1991, when he was named vice president of the company’s embedded products division. In 1995, he became head of the PC products division and also headed the company’s Texas microprocessor unit before assuming his current role. Before joining AMD, Hollatz spent nine years at NCR’s microelectronics division. The departure comes as AMD appears to be on a roll. AMD told CNET News.com earlier this week that the company is on track with plans to ship 3.6 million Athlon and Duron processors this quarter, double the number shipped in the second quarter. It also said it expects to ship 7.2 million of its advanced processors in the fourth quarter.

XOX CORPORATION ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP TEAM

BROCADE APPOINTS JEAN-MARIE MATHIOT
