NEWS BRIEFS
St. Louis, MO. — Unigraphics Solutions Inc. announces that the Russian Ministry of Railways, together with Rosvagonmash, the organizational arm of the ministry, has selected Unigraphics, UGS’ high-end, fully integrated CAD/CAM/CAE software suite, as well as iMAN, UGS’ Internet-centric product data management application and the foundation for UGS’ c-Commerce (collaborative-commerce) strategy, as its standard tools for product development and data management. The contract, signed with Rostehimport, an official UGS distributor, will lead to the implementation in the Ministry’s various design bureaus and factories.
Up to 30 licenses of the UGS software will be initially employed for the design, manufacturing, support and maintenance processes of passenger trains in Russia. Already several leading companies in the Russian railway industry have begun using the software, including Voytovich, Demikhovo, Tver and Magistral.
“The integrated nature of the UGS software suite has enabled us to shorten the design cycle time by more than 50 percent through the use of UGS’ Digital Mockup facilities, versus the time-consuming physical models that we relied upon in the past,” says Andrey Cherkashin, general director of Magistral. “Decisions on the design, ergonomics and payloads of railway carriages can be agreed upon by all parties, including our customers – the train operating organizations – and finalized much quicker than was previously possible. With Unigraphics, quality is incorporated in the design stages and then carried through to the manufacturing and maintenance processes with precision and confidence.”
“We are honored to have been selected by the Ministry of Railways in spite of strong competition,” says Dieter Hansen, manager of Unigraphics Solutions’ extensive Eastern Europe operations. “UGS’ leading position in the Russian aerospace and automotive markets will now be complemented by this new segment of railway systems, which are a vital element of Russia’s transportation infrastructure. There is a great demand for improved capacity and maintainability within the Russian railway system and we look forward to meeting their needs as we have previously done for existing railway industry customers in the USA, UK, Italy, India, China and Australia.”
The Russian railway system is one of the most extensive in the world and transports over one billion passengers per year along the 86,000 km route, including the famous Trans-Siberian Railway. The system, which employs 1.23 million people, serves as a lifeline for many communities by shipping nearly one billion tons of goods per year from isolated manufacturing regions throughout Russia, even in the harshest of climates and geographical obstacles.
Unigraphics (UG) is a fully integrated CAD/CAM/CAE software suite addressing the entire product development process from conceptual design, to functional engineering and analysis, to manufacturing. UG incorporates Predictive Engineering technology – a combination of design optimization techniques with product and process knowledge-based engineering – to dramatically improve productivity in industries like automotive, aerospace, machinery, consumer products, medical instruments and tooling. Unigraphics has been one of the industry’s top rated CAD/CAM applications for 25 years. It is used to improve productivity in the design-through-manufacturing processes at many of the world’s most respected companies including General Motors, Boeing, 3M, Eastman Kodak, DENSO and General Electric.
