NEWS BRIEFS
St. Louis, MO. — Unigraphics Solutions Inc. announces that its Unigraphics CAD/CAM/CAE software is helping researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine evaluate bone fractures and improve patient recovery time. The use of the high-end, fully integrated software suite is empowering graduate research engineers to develop new anthropometric methods using solid models of human skeletal structure.
A recent analysis of the surface topology of the Volar Aspect of the Distal Radius (VADR) revealed surprising news for managing distal radius (forearm) fractures. An assessment of traditional reconstructed CT scans of the distal radius as compared to a sectioned Unigraphics CAD model of the Volar Surface vividly shows that the surface topology of the VADR does not have a standard shape among individuals. By leveraging Unigraphics’ capabilities, orthopedic surgeons are now able to tailor a better fracture recovery program for each patient.
“Unigraphics solid models provide significant improvements over faceted bodies generated from CT scans,” says Vibor Paravic, research engineer and ME graduate student at the Baylor College of Medicine.
“Education continues to be a primary focus, and we are redoubling our efforts to support our faculty educators and students,” says Dr. Philip C. Noble, director of research, Barn Hart Department of Orthopedic Surgery. “Our patients further benefit from the collaborative research environment facilitated with innovative partners like Unigraphics Solutions.”
“We are very proud of the accomplishments of the Baylor College of Medicine research students and their ability to utilize our products for solving complex medical problems,” says Pat Kruse, vice president of the Americas, Unigraphics Solutions. “UGS is committed to assisting academic institutions worldwide in developing quality engineers and technologies for our communities, customers and business partners.”
