NEWS BRIEFS
Fairfax, VA. — Parabon Computation, Inc., a global leader in distributed supercomputing, has reached a milestone this week: Individuals from over 70 countries on 6 continents have downloaded its Pioneer software since the company’s June 14, 2000 launch. In a mere 80 days, news of Parabon’s Internet computing platform moved thousands of computer users from around the world to harness their computers’ idle power via the Internet. Today, this places Parabon’s platform among the 100 most powerful computers in the world.
Parabon’s “Internet computing” platform, Frontier, works by dividing large computer jobs into small tasks and sending them over the Internet to thousands of computers. Then, while the user, or “Provider,” is away from his or her desk, the computer processes the task and sends the results back to Parabon. When all of the results have been returned, Parabon synthesizes the results into a final analysis. Similar to a screen saver, Pioneer only activates when the computer is idle and does not interact with any software or data already on the computer. This design keeps both the computation and the computer safe and secure.
After just 80 days, the world has taken note. Computer users from the United States, Malaysia, Brazil, Germany, Namibia, Australia, and Vatican City are just some of the forces that are helping to build Parabon’s unrivaled supercomputing network. To date, representatives from 75 countries have downloaded the Pioneer software from http://www.parabon.com and are contributing their computers’ idle time to non-profit ventures such as Parabon’s Compute Against Cancer program.
“We are moved by the overwhelming enthusiasm the world has shown thus far,” says Steven Armentrout, Parabon’s president and CEO. “We are creating the world’s most powerful supercomputer together, and this serves as a solid foundation from which we can continue to deliver advanced computing solutions.”
Demonstrating not only the capability of distributed computing, but also its universal appeal, Parabon’s swift global reach is empowering thousands to join the growing network of computer providers. By utilizing computers’ idle capacity across the Internet, Parabon generates vast computing power to respond to a growing number of commercial and non-profit supercomputing needs.
To join the thousands of other Providers worldwide and become part of a global supercomputing force, individuals can go to http://www.parabon.com to download the Pioneer software. In the near future, Providers will have the option to receive compensation for use of their computers’ idle time. Providers also will be able to donate their earnings to the charity of their choice.
