NEWS BRIEFS
Emeryville, CALIF. — Underscoring its commitment to offering customers the very best technology – Sybase, Inc., announced record-setting results of an audited Transaction Processing Performance Council-C (TPC-C) benchmark of Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) 12.0.0.2, its flagship, portal-ready database, on the Sun Enterprise 10000 server (also know as Starfire) running the Solaris Operating Environment. ASE 12.0.0.2 captured the No. 1 slot in SMP database performance, beating Oracle’s best TPC-C performance on Sun’s Starfire platform by 36 percent.
The results highlight ASE’s price/performance leadership on SMP systems. In addition to demonstrating record-breaking performance, the cost per transaction per minute (tpmC) for Sybase ASE 12.0.0.2 is less than half of the price of Oracle 8i on the Starfire platform. ASE’s performance measured 156,873 tpmC at a price of $48.81 per tpmC, verses Oracle’s results of 115,395 tpmC at $105.63 per tpmC. In addition, while some vendors have used multiple database instances and partitioned databases that perform well only in benchmarks, the ASE/Sun result reflects scalability and performance in real world workloads.
The benchmark was performed on Sun Microsystems’ Enterprise 10000 server and demonstrates ASE 12.0.0.2’s unparalleled scalability on SMP systems in using sixty-four, 400 MHz UltraSPARC processors and 64 GB of memory on the Sun Solaris 7 Operating Environment. The benchmark also included 128,800 user connections to 46, Sun Ultra 10 Model 440 servers. “In developing ASE 12.0.0.2, we focused on providing top-notch scalability, functionality and the 24×7, nonstop availability required for today’s e-Businesses,” said Billy Ho, vice president of Products and Solutions Operations at Sybase. “On top of that, we are able to offer an irresistible price/performance for our customers that makes Sybase the most logical choice in this category.”
Sybase ASE 12.0.0.2, in addition to superior performance, low cost and unparalleled scalability on SMP systems, also provides unique continuous availability solutions on such systems. It supports object-relational paradigm using Java in the database, tight XML integration for Internet content management, and Web transaction management. Sybase ASE’s capabilities, performance and scalability make it the top choice for any enterprise relational database management systems (RDBMS) deployment.
