Seattle, WASH. — Cray Inc. announced that the company received its first order from Japan, valued at $3 million. The Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) has ordered a 128-processor Cray T3E-1200E MPP system. The system is scheduled for delivery and customer acceptance in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2000.
The Cray T3E-1200E order is part of a contract administered by system integrator Fujitsu for JAIST’s Information Environment System. The system will be installed in JAIST’s Center for Information Science, where it will be used to support leading-edge research in information science and other advanced scientific research. The Cray T3E-1200E computer system replaces an earlier Cray T3E-600 system sold by the former Cray Research.
“Our faculty and student researchers will use the more powerful Cray T3E-1200E system to promote basic and applied information science, including computational science,” said Professor Teruo Matsuzawa, director of the Center for Information Science.

The current world record for sustained computer speed, more than one trillion calculations per second (teraflops), was achieved on a Cray T3E system and has been recognized with the prestigious Gordon Bell Prize.
