Scottsdale, ARIZ. — The worldwide Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet market will reach over $24 billion in end-use sales by 2004, according to Cahners In-Stat Group. The high-tech market research firm predicts that this growth will result in a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of more than 55%.
2000 will be a record year for Gigabit Ethernet alone with In-Stat expecting it to grow over 200 percent to almost $4 billion. “With the first significant volumes of Gigabit Ethernet over copper products shipping in the second quarter of 2000, the future of Gigabit Ethernet looks bright indeed. By the fourth quarter of 2000, copper Gigabit Ethernet is expected to be shipping more ports per quarter than fiber Gigabit Ethernet,” says Lauri Vickers, Senior Analyst for In-Stat’s Voice and Data Communications Service. “In addition, while 10 Gigabit Ethernet will ship almost nothing in 2000, it is expected to account for 17 percent of combined Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet end-use revenues in 2004.”
In-Stat’s analysis also found:
* The overwhelming prevalence of Ethernet topologies and installed Category 5 copper cable in LANs today creates a huge market opportunity for Gigabit Ethernet.
* The cost competitiveness of copper Gigabit Ethernet products, which have debuted at a third less than comparable fiber products, will accelerate demand for Gigabit Ethernet.
* 10 Gigabit Ethernet is expected to migrate into the WAN and become the aggregation technology of choice in network backbones.
