San Jose, CALIF. — Platform Computing Inc., a global leader in distributed resource management (DRM) solutions and Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced a far reaching joint marketing and development agreement, marking an expansion of the two companies’ long-time, global collaboration. Sun Microsystems and Platform Computing, partners since 1996, will work closely together to continue to satisfy the growing market demand for next-generation, high performance technical computing solutions for Fortune 1,000 and e-Business organizations.
In order to help ensure continued value to customers using their products, Sun and Platform Computing will continue joint development of high performance computing software. The two companies will provide that their respective software products – Platform’s LSF (Load Sharing Facility), Sun’s Solaris Operating Environment and clustering tools – remain fully compatible in current and future releases. A popular DRM solution for Sun customers, Platform’s LSF Suite is currently co-marketed by Sun through its on-line store ( http://store.sun.com ). Joint customers include industry leaders Texas Instruments, Motorola and Advanced Micro Devices.
Sun Microsystems continues to use LSF in the design of its high performance workstation and server product lines. “Today, Sun furthers an already strong and long-standing alliance with Platform Computing,” said Doug Kaewert, vice president, Market Development, Sun Microsystems. “This agreement ensures customers of the continued integration between the two companies’ technologies. By marrying Platform’s application resource capability with Sun’s industry-leading hardware systems, we can offer our customers both unprecedented high performance computing solutions and control over their compute resources.”
“Sun, the leading business solutions vendor in the Internet marketplace today, and Platform recognize that complex computing environments absolutely demand a complete integration of systems, application and network infrastructure – everything has to work together seamlessly,” said Phil Weaver, president and COO, Platform Computing Corp. “We, with a partner like Sun, are uniquely positioned to deliver the solutions the market demands.” LSF is a key enabling technology in some of the world’s largest ‘superclusters’ where thousands of computers work in concert on some of the most advanced computing projects devised.
Used in a wide range of vertical markets including automotive, computer and semiconductor design, aerospace, finance, government and biotechnology, LSF gives enterprises the ability to fully maximize the use of their computing resources – including applications, hardware and personnel. The two companies have agreed to co-market the combined solution, in markets that include electronic design automation, mechanical design automation, finance, education and advanced research.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision – “The Network Is The Computer” – has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc. to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that power the Internet and allow companies worldwide to dot-com their businesses.
