NEWS BRIEFS
San Francisco, CALIF. — Unisys Corporation and Hewlett-Packard Company announced the signing of an OEM agreement that will extend the relationship of the two companies.
Under terms of the agreement, HP will market an HP NetServer 32-way system based on the Unisys Cellular MultiProcessing (CMP) server architecture. Unisys sells CMP based servers under the Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES7000 brand. Driven by Hewlett-Packard’s strong position in the standards-based server market, CMP server technology is taking another major step toward becoming a standard for large-scale, high-performance servers based on Intel and Microsoft technology.
CMP is the only server architecture to take full advantage of Microsoft’s Windows 2000 Datacenter Server operating system’s support for 32 processors. Unisys has sold HP PCs and entry-level PC servers under the “HP for Unisys” label since mid-1998.
The agreement will join the powerful and scalable Unisys CMP architecture with HP’s recognized expertise and capabilities in meeting demanding enterprise customer requirements.
“By extending our relationship with Unisys, HP will expand our ability to deliver a solution to our customers who require the highest level of performance, availability, and stability on an industry standard platform,” said Webb McKinney, vice-president and general manager of HP’s PC Organization. “We are proud to make this offering a part of our Windows 2000 Datacenter Server solution.”
“The HP brand equals excellence and leadership,” said George Gazerwitz, executive vice president, Unisys Corporation. “The CMP architecture has been extremely well received by the market since the product introductions earlier this year. Our sales are accelerating rapidly. This agreement with HP is a further endorsement of our CMP architecture, a recognition of CMP’s unprecedented ability to satisfy the industry’s most demanding requirements for performance and scalability with solutions based on industry-standard Microsoft and Intel technology. It builds on a solid, complementary relationship we already have with Hewlett-Packard, which supplies us with high-quality PCs and entry-level servers.” The HP NetServer 32-way system is expected to be available in early 2001.
CMP provides an array of computing capabilities well known to users of mainframe-class computers, but now available with the advantages of Intel- and Microsoft technology. Designed for the power of Intel Pentium III Xeon (32-bit) and Itanium (64-bit) processors, the architecture enables the industry’s only Intel 32-processor server. The CMP based server platform optimizes the capabilities of the highly scalable Windows 2000 Datacenter Server operating system.
