NEWS BRIEFS
San Francisco, CALIF. — Oracle Corp. and Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced an updated migration tool as another milestone in the strategic Oracle and Sun joint developer initiative the companies announced last year. The Oracle Migration Workbench version 1.3 for the Solaris Operating Environment will enable developers to migrate Microsoft SQL Server 6.5, Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and Sybase Adaptive Server 11.0 running on Windows NT to Oracle8i on the Solaris platform.
Sun has already shipped 250,000 copies of Oracle Migration Workbench 1.2 with the Solaris 8 Operating Environment. The new release version 1.3 extends support to Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and Sybase Adaptive Server 11.0
“We have been looking for a more reliable, truly scalable database solution to support our development activities,” said Bob Paquin, Chief Information Officer and Chief Operating Officer for Blue Nile Inc., the leading online retailer of diamonds and fine jewelry. “These enhancements through the Oracle and Sun joint developer initiative will allow us to spend more time developing exciting new applications for our customers and less time configuring the development platform.”
The Oracle and Sun joint developer initiative was created last year to increase cooperation between the two companies in several key areas that relate to developers. “We are particularly focused on providing Microsoft developers with a clear migration path to a more reliable, scalable and trusted platform – Oracle on Sun,” said Doug Kaewert, vice president, Market Development, Sun Microsystems. “The Oracle Migration Workbench is a critical complement to Sun’s NT to Solaris and Java migration program. Sun and Oracle are dedicated to providing the best set of developer programs in the industry.”
“Many emerging e-businesses choose platforms that serve them well initially, but do not fully support their needs as they grow,” said Michael Rocha, senior vice president, Platform Technologies Division, Oracle. “These companies must be able to migrate to a more robust, highly available, scalable and trusted solution that will enable them to do business, and these updates via the Oracle and Sun joint developer initiative will help smooth that transition easily and cost effectively.”
Oracle Migration Workbench 1.3 is available now for free download on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), and is scheduled to ship with every copy of the Solaris 8 Operating Environment beginning in January 2001.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision – “The Network is The Computer” – has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc., to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that power the Internet and allow companies worldwide to dot-com their businesses.
