Concord, MASS. — Giganet, Inc., a leader in VI- based data center networks, announced that the company’s award-winning VI-based network products enabled a breakthrough BaanERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) benchmark on IBM Netfinity Servers running SQL Server 2000. The benchmark achieved a record breaking 8015 Baan Reference Users (BRU) and showed that server user capacity was increased by 30% when Gigabit Ethernet was replaced with a Giganet VI network.
The benchmark system was comprised of Microsoft Windows 2000, SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, ten IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 servers, one IBM Netfinity 8500, all interconnected by a Giganet VI network. Both Giganet and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 support the Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture, which eliminates normal network limitations, such as high system overhead and latency, and accelerates application and data throughput. The results show that with lower system overhead and higher message throughput, there is more server CPU processing power for processing applications. Also, with lower systems overhead and faster database response rates, the database can provide support for more users.
“IBM Netfinity Servers and Giganet VI networks deliver a powerful enterprise database system platform and network infrastructure for today’s Data Centers,” said Don Roy, Director of Netfinity Marketing at IBM. “IBM’s Netfinity Servers and Giganet VI networks enable data intensive environments to scale on demand.” The BaanERP 5.0b benchmark is designed to stimulate typical Enterprise Resource Planning business transactions using the Baan’s ERP application module.
The benchmark is an application-based standardized test that measures the performance and number of users within a controlled environment. In typical Baan application environments a significant amount of system resources are used for server-to-server communications. With a Giganet VI-based cLAN networks, system communication overhead is greatly reduced – allowing both application and database servers to more efficiently manage application workload and process user transactions.
“Giganet VI networks have once again proven to be the de facto network for database acceleration and scalability – delivering superior application performance when combined with SQL Server 2000 and IBM Netfinity Servers,” said Gareth Taube, Giganet’s senior vice president of Marketing and Sales. “The BaanERP benchmark demonstrates that Giganet VI networks can handle today’s demanding ERP and e-commerce applications and deliver unsurpassed application performance.”
Giganet’s VI networks are the first products to implement the VI Architecture standard in hardware, allowing servers to communicate at unprecedented speeds, with greatly reduced systems overhead, and ultra low message latency.
