NEWS BRIEFS
Palo Alto, CALIF. — Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced that its flagship Sun StorEdge array for the Enterprise now scales from 1.3 to 169 terabytes with the addition of new-generation 73-gigabyte (GB) disk drives. This high-availability array offers full redundancy, including mirrored cache, and is well-suited to meet the enormous scalability requirements of the Net economy. Sun also announced ramped-up production of the Sun StorEdge T3 array to meet increasing customer demand.
“Faced with ever-increasing and often unpredictable data storage requirements, customers need to scale their capacity quickly,” said Bill Groth, director of enterprise storage product marketing for Sun Network Storage. “At the same time, it is critical that their data availability is not compromised and that system performance doesn’t slow down as capacity grows. The Sun StorEdge T3 array delivers linear scalability of not only capacity, but performance and availability as well. This gives Sun customers complete confidence that they will be able to grow their storage exponentially with the expanding requirements of the Net economy.”
The Sun StorEdge T3 array, which was just introduced in June, was designed to easily and quickly integrate new-generation disk drive technology to support growing data storage requirements with existing storage infrastructure.
The modular design of the highly scalable Sun StorEdge T3 array allows customers the choice of purchasing in either very small or very large increments to meet their needs. The system’s inherent scalability enables customers to address a wide range of storage needs within the enterprise, including database, NFS, web serving and email, and a variety of other workloads. As capacity is added, the array provides linear scalability of performance, capacity, and availability.
Sun has designed the Sun StorEdge T3 array for the Enterprise for continuous availability. The system incorporates device-level redundancy and built-in reliability, availability and serviceability features. For easy manageability, the Sun StorEdge T3 array includes Sun StorEdge Component Manager software, a next-generation storage management tool for centralized management of distributed networks.
The Sun StorEdge T3 array for the Enterprise is now shipping with up to 5.2 TBs within a standard cabinet and up to 169 TBs per Sun Enterprise 10,000 server. The Sun StorEdge T3 array for the Enterprise is list priced at $150,890 for a 1.3-TB configuration, while a 5.2-TB configuration is list priced at $603,550. Pricing and availability are subject to change without notice.
Sun Network Storage was formed by Sun Microsystems in July 1998 and is a recognized multi-billion dollar industry leader in the UNIX and open systems storage market.
