NEWS BRIEFS
Boulder, COLO. — Visual Numerics, Inc., a developer of web-enabled data visualization, numerical analysis and enterprise software solutions, this month celebrates its 30th anniversary as an independent software vendor, an accomplishment seldom seen in today’s business environment.
The company was founded as Houston-based IMSL, Inc., in October 1970 by Charles E. Johnson, a former IBM statistician who today serves as chairman of Visual Numerics. The “Visual Numerics” name was established in 1992 when IMSL merged with Boulder-based Precision Visuals, Inc.
Today, the company maintains major operations in both Houston and Boulder. In addition, Visual Numerics operates sales offices in several other American cities and wholly owned subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Mexico. The company employs some 125 persons worldwide.
“This is indeed a significant milestone in the history of our company. It reflects the strong commitment to quality, service and innovation that all of our employees have shared over the past 30 years,” said Johnson, who lives in Racine, WI. “Most software companies our size are absorbed into larger organizations, where they lose their customer focus. By maintaining our independence, we’ve stayed the course and continued to advance technology on behalf of our customers.”
“Independence of thought and creativity is the bedrock of our corporate culture,” said Richard G. Couch, chief executive officer of Visual Numerics. “We’re not guided by corporate objectives that are out-of-touch with our customers, but rather by a sincere desire to provide value to our customers through innovative technology and outstanding service.”
Visual Numerics’ software products help users understand complex data, which is typically in the form of rows and columns of numbers. The company provides its data visualization and numerical analysis software tools to major corporations, academic institutions, and research laboratories worldwide. Typical users include scientists, researchers, engineers, and financial analysts at organizations such as Bear, Stearns & Company; Sandia National Laboratories; American Association of Railroads; Boeing Company; and Coleman Research Corp.
Visual Numerics’ products include JWAVE for enterprise data analysis, PV-WAVE for desktop data analysis, iDecizion for business intelligence data analysis, INVIZION for time series data analysis, and the IMSL Libraries for mathematical and statistical analysis.
