FEATURES & COMMENTARY
Dear Editor,
With regard to the recent article “CEI relies on clusters for supercomputing” (18754), I would like to correct some errors that were made by the News and Observer writer:
1. The cluster cost about $35,000, not $130,000. This is a key point about clustering: it’s inexpensive in terms of hardware.
2. CEI is working on modifying EnSight to work in a cluster environment. CEI is NOT working on modifying ‘ASCI’s software to work in a cluster environment’
3. “It’s cheaper than that one, and it can run the same applications,” The Linux cluster most definitely can NOT run the same applications. For applications that do run on both types of machines, most have a significant price to performance advantage on the Linux cluster.
Sincerely,
Anders Grimsrud CEI, Inc.
