Dallas, Texas — SGI has announced the OpenGL Vizserver(TM) 1.2 computing solution, which includes support for Sun(R) Solaris(TM) desktop systems. Designed for OpenGL(R) users working with large data volumes, including seismic data analysis, scientific visualization and manufacturing design and engineering, OpenGL Vizserver(TM) allows application-transparent interactivity over standard high-speed networks. By supporting additional client platforms, OpenGL Vizserver 1.2 enables wider access to the unparalleled visualization capabilities of SGI(TM) Onyx(R) family systems, enhancing individual productivity, system utilization and return oninvestment.
“Since the product’s inception, OpenGL Vizserver has been well-received in the scientific, energy and medical markets,” said Jan Silverman, vice president of Advanced Systems, SGI. “These markets demand the highest graphics performance available, levels attained only by SGI Onyx family systems. Through OpenGL Vizserver we can deliver this caliber of visualization to users of any desktop workstation.”
“The addition of a Solaris client means many more of our users will be able to take advantage of SGI Onyx graphics from their offices,” said Arthurine Breckenridge, principal member of technical staff, Sandia National Laboratory. “This expansion of SGI visual serving technology is an important step in serving advanced real-time graphics from our supercomputers.”
OpenGL Vizserver 1.2 will be available starting December 1, 2000. SGI further intends to provide a Linux(R) operating system client for OpenGL Vizserver in the near future and offer clients on virtually any other desktop platform as a professional service.
The server side of OpenGL Vizserver software runs on the recently announced SGI(TM) Onyx(R) 3000 series visualization systems and SGI(TM) Origin(TM) 3000 series servers. Available immediately, these systems deliver flexibility, resiliency, overall investment protection and superior performance through the use of patented SGI NUMAflex(TM) modular technology. Allowing a brick-style approach for constructing small to very large systems from a common set of building blocks, NUMAflex lets users build their optimum configuration one component at a time and adopt new technologies that map to their specific business or research needs.
About OpenGL Vizserver
OpenGL Vizserver enables a single SGI Onyx 3000 series or Silicon Graphics(R) Onyx2(R) system to distribute visualization sessions to multiple UNIX(R) operating system desktop workstations. SGI Onyx family systems support concurrent, real-time processing of complex 3D graphics, rich 2D imagery, and ultrahigh-resolution video for the world’s fastest, most realistic visualization. With OpenGL Vizserver, graphics processing is handled entirely on the SGI Onyx family system, saving customers money by allowing them to leverage SGI Onyx capabilities through the use of Silicon Graphics(R) Octane(R), Silicon Graphics(R) O2(R) and other UNIX desktop systems.
