NEWS BRIEFS LIVEwire
Dallas, Texas — Avici Systems Inc., a leading provider of scalable core routing solutions for intelligent IP-over-optical networks, today announced the inclusion of its Terabit Switch Router (TSR(R)) in the SuperComputing 2000 (SC 2000) SCiNET network. The TSR is carrying live traffic over multiple OC-48 (2.5Gbps) connections from the core of the Sandia National Laboratory network in California to the site of the demonstration at the ASCI booth located in Dallas, from Nov. 6-10, 2000.
The ASCI SC 2000 demonstration uses the National Transparent Optical Network (NTON) and the High-Speed Connectivity Consortium (HSCC) nationwide IP infrastructure provided by Qwest Communications to allow Sandia, Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley national laboratories to show how the world’s fastest supercomputer is enabling a new generation of research initiatives. The Avici TSR provides high-speed backbone capacity to enable the three labs to support applications such as remote interactive visualization of terabytes of scientific information.
NTON connects points of presence from Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles, a span of 960 miles. It is managed by GST/Time Warner through its role in the NTON Consortium. The Avici TSR has been deployed in the core of the NTON network for more than a year, providing high-speed connectivity to its research community members.
“Our SC2000 demonstration highlights the TSR’s capacity to support the most demanding of applications generated by the world’s most powerful supercomputing network,” said Pete Chadwick, vice president of marketing at Avici. “By powering the core of the NTON network for more than a year, Avici has gained a significant advantage over the competition and proven its capabilities to support high-speed applications.”
Designed to provide packet intelligence to the core of optical networks, Avici’s TSR is a highly reliable and scalable platform capable of in-service upgrades, enabling carriers to provision bandwidth as they need it. With the TSR’s composite links technology, carriers can quickly roll out IP backbones and adjust bandwidth according to demand.
About NTON
The National Transparent Optical Network is the West Coast backbone for the Next Generation Internet (NGI) “SuperNet” project, a research and development test bed for advanced high-bandwidth Internet applications administered under the auspices of the Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA). NTON is being developed and operated by members of the NTON Consortium which include Nortel Networks, GST/Time Warner, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sprint Communications, and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART).
