Dallas, Texas — Seagate Technology’s (NYSE: SEG) Cheetah X15 is helping the industry rack up TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council) wins, with Compaq posting a range of TPC world records. The Cheetah X15, the industry’s first and only 15K RPM disc drive, not only paved the way for these transaction-processing world records, but it has enabled these performance levels to be set at a record low cost per transaction. Compaq’s ProLiant ML570 set the TPC-C Price/Performance world record with the first-ever cost/tpmC under $10, which utilized Seagate’s Cheetah X15.(1)
Companies are looking for ways to drive down the cost of servicing customers in transaction-based applications such as e-commerce or database environments, and the Cheetah X15 is helping to reduce these costs. “Customers often have to configure a large number of disk drives to achieve the performance levels required by their databases,” said Compaq’s Transaction Performance Council Director, Mike Nikolaiev. “The Cheetah X15s helped us to achieve those same levels of performance utilizing 42 percent fewer disk drives.”
In real-world applications, the Cheetah X15 has clearly proven itself as the undisputed performance leader. Compaq has used this new drive to achieve world record TPC performance with the best-in-class ProLiant ML570 server with three processors installed (TPC-C benchmark), the ProLiant 8000-X700 server with eight processors installed (TPC-H 100GB database benchmark), and the 192 processor ProLiant 8500 server cluster (TPC-C benchmark). Compaq has also achieved world-record lowest price/performance on both its ProLiant ML570 server with three and four processors installed, its ProLiant 8000-X700 server with eight processors installed, and its ProLiant 8500 server cluster with 192 processors installed.(2)
“Compaq is committed to providing the highest-performing core technology available to support our industry-leading server products. Utilizing the new Cheetah X15s from Seagate, we have been able to push our database performance for our TPC benchmarks to new levels,” said Mr. Nikolaiev. “The combined power of these solutions from Compaq and Seagate have enabled us to produce the highest level of I/O rates than we’ve ever seen in disk subsystems. We are proud to be able to provide our customers with this incredible price/performance leadership from Compaq and Seagate.”
The Cheetah X15 has garnered industry-wide acceptance and experienced high adoption rates from leading OEM’s such as Compaq, not only because of its performance generated from the fastest seek and latency times in the industry, but also for its extremely high reliability and ease of integration. The Cheetah X15, with the industry’s highest Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of 1,200,000 hours, easily integrates into new or pre-existing systems because it has the same power, cooling, and acoustic ratings as Seagate’s last-generation 10K Cheetah. And with a 33 percent improvement in IOPS over Seagate’s 10K Cheetah family, the Cheetah X15 is clearly the best choice for performance applications.
