Kansas City, MO. — Atipa Corporation, a leading end-to-end provider of Open Source and Linux technology solutions, announced at the Supercomputing 2000 (SC 2000) Conference in Dallas that it is now offering prospective customers free on-line testing of its new Ascendance Beowulf clusters.
Initially, Atipa is providing customers with full access to two 4-node Ascendance clusters, one AMD and one Intel. Each of the Beowulf clusters has been configured with Wulfkit, Myrinet, Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to enable customers to test drive the clusters and benchmark their own applications using any or all of the four options.
“The clear and compelling price/performance advantage of Linux clusters over traditional supercomputers is pushing more and more customers to explore whether a Beowulf cluster is the solution they need,” said Mike Jacobs, Vice President of Atipa’s Hardware Group. “As this awareness increases, we want to make it simple and easy for our customers to take a test drive and quickly gather the supporting data they need to make the move to an Atipa Ascendance cluster. The initiation of on-line benchmark testing is the latest in a series of steps Atipa is taking to position itself as a leading vendor of choice in the high performance computing market.”
“The AMD Athlon processor provides an excellent solution in a Beowulf cluster supercomputer,” said Lee Little, Director of AMD’s Field Marketing for the Americas. “Its floating point unit, stability, and scalability offer leading-edge performance for business, government, education, consumer, and scientific research applications.”
Customers interested in taking a test drive on an Ascendance Beowulf cluster can visit Atipa on the web at www.atipa.com/testdrive and choose their configuration. Atipa is a leading provider of Linux clusters for high performance computing to the scientific, educational, and corporate sectors and has specialized in innovative Beowulf solutions since 1995.
Since then Atipa has developed a large and diverse client base that includes ExxonMobil, Motorola, Sharp Electronics, NASA, M.I.T., and other leading public and private institutions involved in high performance computing.

The full line of Ascendance clusters announced last month by Atipa are turn-key cluster solutions that come in 4- and 8-node configurations and are available across Intel, AMD and Alpha platforms. In addition to the connectivity options, the Ascendance series offers “CHAMPS”, the user-friendly Cluster Health and Monitored Performance System that makes life easier for administrators.
As a result of Atipa’s strategic partnership with Scientific Computing Associates (SCA), the Ascendance clusters come bundled free-of-charge with a 4-processor Linux version of Linda, SCA’s powerful enabling program that allows Atipa’s customers to more easily “parallelize” their existing applications, saving both time and money. In addition, the Ascendance clusters are available in 1U, 2U, and 3U rack mount cases or in Full Tower cases, and hot swappable power supplies are available for additional fault tolerance.
