NEWS BRIEFS
Mountain View, CALIF. — ANSYS, Inc. and SGI announced that they are collaborating to optimize the performance of larger, faster and more complex simulations through multiprocessor technology – reducing turnaround times from several days to just a few hours. With the parallel processing capabilities of the ANSYS software products and the SGI Origin family of servers running the IRIX operating system, the two companies will deliver previously unheard of expansion capabilities and reliability.
“SGI continues to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to technical computing by providing us with equipment and technical engineering resources to develop, test and optimize ANSYS products,” said Paul Bemis, vice president, ANSYS, Inc. “By teaming up with SGI on optimization techniques for our new solver technologies, we drastically reduce the time needed to produce results.” The optimized technology is geared for industries such as aerospace, aircraft engines, automotive and MEMS (micro electrical mechanical systems).
The initial tuning of the ANSYS software will be done on an SGI 2000 series system with 16 processors and 16GB of main memory. Because the system is a rack server – powerful, flexible and scalable in all dimensions – customers will have the ability to add more processors using NUMAflex modular building blocks to scale the single shared-memory system, as the problem size increases.
Additionally, high-performance networking and remote management tools will allow customers to position SGI Origin family servers wherever a company requires, maintaining data and the configuration consistency of remote systems. “We value our strong relationship with ANSYS, Inc.,” said Ken Jacobsen, vice president of ISV Partner Programs, SGI. “Our joint work with the ANSYS development team is a key factor in our ability to continue to meet the computing resource demands in engineering simulation. Our investment in hardware at ANSYS is part of our commitment to our customers to be the leader in the technical computing market.”
