Chelmsford, MASS. — Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. announced that it has shipped high-performance RACE++ systems to the Tactical Electronic Warfare Division of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. NRL will use Mercury’s systems, which include 400 MHz PowerPC “G4” processors, to perform research in real-time processing of wideband digital data and to develop an advanced receiver system.
“We are required to develop advanced tactical systems to detect, identify and classify imposing weapons systems, which are becoming increasingly more sophisticated,” said Dr. Ted Roberts, section head of the information extraction section of the Naval Research Laboratory.
“Several of our major deployment programs started with our systems being used in defense research centers such as NRL,” said Vince Mancuso, vice president and general manager of Mercury’s Government Electronics Group. “Programs such as this one continue to place Mercury in the forefront of defense digital signal and image processing applications. Not only do Mercury’s products supply immense computing power in a compact size, but our investment in supporting the defense lab infrastructure provides state-of-the-art signal and image processing developers with the vast resources of the market leader in embedded COTS solutions.”
The Naval Research Laboratory, commissioned in 1923 by Congress for the Department of Navy, serves as the Navy’s corporate laboratory. NRL conducts a broad program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new improved materials, techniques and equipment. The Tactical Electronic Warfare Division (TEWD) provides new and advanced concepts and systems in electronic warfare that improve the ability of the Navy to perform its vital mission.
