Louisville, COLO. — StorageTek announced that it has donated a PowderHorn‰ 9310 automated cartridge system (including four attached tape drives) to Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The system, valued at $750,000, is among the largest donations of equipment that the university has ever received.
The PowderHorn library will support Indiana University’s participation in the Internet2, a non-profit consortium of universities and corporations working to develop and implement advanced technologies that are not possible on the existing Internet. These technologies will allow for improved distance learning and enable entirely new applications, such as virtual reality, to flourish. The donation allows IU, a founding member of the consortium, to make significant technological advances in these projects.
“Indiana University is delighted to accept this generous donation of a PowderHorn from StorageTek,” said Michael McRobbie, vice president for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at Indiana University. “This will greatly expand our massive data storage capabilities and will enable us to gain experience in integrating a totally new storage capability into our present state-of-the-art storage environment. It also will form an important part of our involvement in Internet2’s distributed data storage activities.”
“StorageTek supports educational research into the ever growing and changing field of technology,” said Roger Archibald, StorageTek vice president and general manager, Enterprise Business Group. “We welcome the opportunity to help IU move forward with its goals of creating versatile and competent storage.”
“The massive data storage capacity of the PowderHorn tape library is already in use by researchers in a number of disciplines including astronomy, biology, chemistry, and physics,” said Gerry Bernbom, director of research and Academic Computing at Indiana University. “Scientists in geology, for example, are collecting information about earthquakes from 1,000 remote sensors and storing the resulting seismic data in IU’s massive data storage system. The PowderHorn tape library is also being used for archiving digital video and it will be a component of IU’s recently announced project to develop a multimedia digital music library. ”
Indiana University is one of the oldest state universities in the Midwest and is also one of the largest universities in the United States. It has more than 100,000 students, faculty and staff on eight campuses. StorageTek is the only global information storage provider to use “Open, Intelligent and Integrated” solutions to promote the efficient use of critical information and remove the information management constraints that inhibit business growth. Our competencies – tape and tape automation, virtual storage and open SANs (storage area networks) – effectively manage the explosion of information, and save time, money and resources.
