San Ramon, CALIF. — Software AG Inc. and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), an organized research unit of the University of California, San Diego, have partnered to explore innovative applications of XML technology in nonprofit research projects.
XML (Extensible Markup Language) offers organizations the ability to retrieve and store various types of data from diverse sources, including the Internet, and to facilitate high-volume data transactions among users.
Software AG will donate its Tamino native XML database to support various SDSC research projects. SDSC’s Data Intensive Computing Environments group (DICE), is currently involved with collaborations with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and the California Digital Library (CDL). XML database tools are used to store, integrate and exchange XML data throughout the activities with these and other organizations.
“Software AG is committed to the ongoing research and development of XML-based projects,” Alf Goebel, president, Software AG Inc., said. “We are pleased to support the efforts of SDSC and hope that Tamino will allow the center’s scientists to accelerate their training and prototyping activities by leveraging the benefits of our unique native XML technology.”
SDSC staff scientist, Richard Marciano, is working together with other researchers to look into integrated XML-based environments.
“Integrated digital data collections are becoming indispensable to the advance of science and the functions of government agencies, and XML technology is becoming a key component for various SDSC projects,” Marciano said. “Our activities are taking the first steps to integrate many independent efforts and create a scalable data-handling and information discovery environment.”
Software AG recently joined SDSC at the SC2000 show in Dallas, Texas, for a joint demonstration of Tamino’s use in a testbed project for the California Digital Library (CDL), featuring art museum data. For additional information about SDSC’s DICE activities, see http://www.sdsc.edu/DICE
SDSC (http://www.sdsc.edu) is an organized research unit of the University of California, San Diego, and the leading-edge site of the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI, http://www.npaci.edu). SDSC is funded by the National Science Foundation through NPACI and other federal agencies, the state and University of California, and private organizations.
