NEWS BRIEFS
Research Triangle Park, N.C. — Red Hat, Inc., a leader in developing, deploying and managing open source solutions announced that Keio University will build a large-scale campus network server system using Red Hat Linux 7 and IBM Netfinity 4500R server, from Japan IBM Corporation. This campus server network system will also adopt the new IBM eServer xSeries network servers from IBM Japan.
This network will integrate the independent campus networks at Keio’s Hiyoshi and Yagami Campuses and provide 15,000 teachers, staff and students with basic network services including file-sharing and e-mail. The new system will go on-line April 2001. The network will expand to other campuses starting from the next fiscal year.
Keio plans to install 47 Netfinity 4500R servers running Red Hat Linux 7, each having minimum capacity of 5 tetrabytes. IBM’s Netfinity will be provided by Alpha Computer, Incorporated, a business partner of IBM. IBM Netfinity 4500R is a rack-optimized server with expandability as well as mid-range server performance and operability, all condensed into a 3U size. It contains an Intel Pentium III processor and provides high scalability by expanding to 2-way SMP. The IBM xSeries, are high cost-performance servers based on the X-architecture that integrates IBM’s server technology realizing high reliability/availability with the industry standard Intel architecture.
Red Hat offers users one single, trusted point of contact and a common plaform for developing, deploying and managing open source across Internet infrastructure and devices that connect to the Internet, ranging from small embedded devices to high availability clusters and integrated Web server/ecommerce OSes.
