TOP 50 HPCwire HEADLINES OF 2000: THE #1 STORY FOR EACH ISSUE

January 19, 2001

FEATURES AND COMMENTARY

San Diego, CA — In each issue of HPCwire we list the most popular stories from the past week. Usually, these are a clear indication of what the HPC community considers the most important issues for that week. For most editions, it’s business as usual with a variety of new systems installed, ongoing debates between proponents of open source versus proprietary systems or Unix vs NT, announcements concerning new developments in clustering technology, nanotechnology, quantum computing, etc.

There were, however, a few surprise stories in 2000: Larry Smarr left NCSA to become a professor at UCSD then went on to snag some even bigger fish… Cal-(IT)2. Tera, with only one MTA supercomputer installation ever, suddenly bought the legendary Cray supercomputing division from SGI. After losing its NSF funding several years ago, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center became the phoenix story of the year with several award wins including $45M from… you guessed it, the NSF. A Cray C90 was offered and sold on eBay for a fraction of its original value — imagine that! And the tragic Los Alamos fires wreaked havoc in one of our most venerable research communities.

Well there you have it; we now proudly present the #1 story from each issue of HPCwire throughout Year 2000.
