NEWS BRIEFS
SAN JOSE, CA — SDL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDLI) announced today the introduction of a new product line of low cost, small form factor erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) for use in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) fiber optic transmission networks. The SDL MA-C series is designed to provide cost effective amplification at specific points in the network to increase flexibility in deployments. The company is presently ramping volume shipments of this product to a number of customers.
These micro-amplifiers are well suited to boost individual DWDM channels at the transmitter, as well as pre-amplify signals at the receiver to increase effective distances or to better handle increasing bit rates. The SDL MA-C series can also be used to amplify single channels at an optical switch or wavelength router to compensate for losses effectively making transparent switching possible.
The micro-amplifier module delivers stable and reliable power to meet the stringent temperature requirements in a small form factor package. This enables next generation DWDM system engineers both design and architecture flexibility. The MA-C series is powered by SDL 980 nm pump modules that utilize the new high performance SDL 6540 980 nm chips.
According to Gregory P. Dougherty, chief operating officer of SDL, “The new SDL micro-amplifier series directly addresses recent customer requests for low cost, power efficient EDFAs in a small form factor to enable a new generation of DWDM system architectures. The new all-optical network architectures are being driven by higher bit rates, transparent switching and wavelength routing. We anticipate this offering is the first in a series of micro-amplifier products that will address the expanding requirements of all optical network architectures. For example, micro-amplifiers are expected to be used in high volumes to compensate for losses in optical switches and multiplexors in next generation all-optical networks. This first EDFA in the SDL MA-C series uses SDL’s well established 980 nm pump module and chips that are in high volume production for both terrestrial and submarine applications to provide low cost, high efficiency and small form factor amplifiers.”
About SDL
SDL’s products power the transmission of data, voice and Internet information over fiber optic networks to meet the needs of telecommunications, DWDM, cable television and satellite communications applications. They enable customers to meet the bandwidth needs of increasing Internet, data, video and voice traffic by expanding their fiber optic communications networks much more quickly and efficiently than would be possible using conventional electronic and optical technologies. SDL’s optical products also serve a variety of non-communications applications, including materials processing and printing.
