Austin, TX — Today NeTraverse released a 25-seat multi-user Beta of its innovative Win4Lin software. This beta program addresses the exploding demand for a “server-based computing” platform for the Linux community.

“Our goal is to leverage the benefits of the Linux-Intel combination to provide a scalable server-based productivity application solution targeted at serving Windows applications to the department, small-business or branch office user,” said James Curtin, president and CEO of NeTraverse. “This beta release is our first step in that direction as we are specifically targeting the savvy Linux user and the Linux administrator community, seeking their comments and feedback on how they are using the product and what features they would like to see added in the upcoming general available version planned for the spring.”

The NeTraverse multi-user Beta program is a result of the astonishing volume of creative unsolicited deployment scenarios the company learned about from customers exploiting the unannounced 5-user capability in the previous Win4Lin 2.0 beta program. “We were excited to see the ingenuity and resourcefulness of our customers in pushing the envelope with the product. With this release we are specifically targeting feedback from Linux users on improving the multi-user and server capabilities,” said Alan Boyd, NeTraverse vice president of Marketing and Sales.

“Your (multi-session) product will play a significant, if not crucial part in our Linux deployment project(s),” stated Tom Dossis, of Yoma Textiles. “We’re deploying Win4Lin on a multiprocessor server. The user workstations are 4+ year old revamped (upgraded VGA and network cards + new monitor) Pentium 120 systems running as Linux X-Workstations. Works great! Saves a lot of money on hardware and of course eliminates just about all desktop admin.”

The UNIX version of the Win4Lin technology, running on SCO OpenServer and Unixware, currently supports over one hundred concurrent users on a Pentium Quad ZEON configuration at German Railway. Following the results of this Beta program, NeTraverse will target the delivery of this level of performance or better on Linux. Development efforts at NeTraverse will be aimed at optimizing this code quickly so the Linux community has an alternative to the “Citrix style” server-based thin-client computing model.
