The hum of supercomputers in the National Center for Computational Sciences is now such that visitors are required to wear ear plugs. The success of the place rings even louder. A recent report identified 10 breakthroughs in U.S. computational science during the past year, and six of those involved science done with high-performance machines at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee — including a new understanding of the way stars explode and a first-of-its-kind simulation of combustion processes that may help improve engine designs.
