Calling to mind the title of the Nicholas Carr’s masterpiece on the client-server to grid to cloud to worldwide paradigm (and all point in between) in the title, the question has become whether cloud computing is the next major shift in use, ideology, and business (not to mention HPC) operation. While the technological innovation behind the cloud movement is not generally questioned outside of the issues of security and other practical workable problems, the barrier to adoption lies simply in cloud presentation strategy and, you guessed it, economic factors. A discussion of drivers and barriers, development and deployment options, metrics, models, and demand will be the subject of future conversations on this question.
