One of the most difficult elements of building cloud applications is figuring out how to best distribute tasks over the vast host of computers without suffering lags in performance. While advances in virtualization are helping with this issue, one of the big problems is that programming has not caught up with what is critical for cloud environments. The research being performed by Joseph Hellerstein at U.C. Berkeley is seeking to create a better development enviornment by creating a cloud-specific language called Bloom, which is set for release later this year. The possibility of taking all of the servers and unifying them is powerful stuff indeed–and it could be that Bloom will blossom into one of the best advances in the cloud space in recent months…or years?
