Even though for many, the definition and security issues around cloud seem nebulous at best, there is great potential for cloud to deliver supercomputing capacity into the mainstream. This is, in fact, one of the ways it will revolutionize computing, according to Dr. Andrew Herbert from Microsoft’s research division. Dr. Herbert goes on to suggest that “part of the vision of cloud computing is to make computing on that [supecomputing] scale available to anyone from any device…now that could be a device like the next generation of mobile devices such as smart phones.” The ability for anyone to enable the power of a supercomputer for business demands is, at least according to Herbert, part of the driver behind new initiatives at Microsoft Research.
