Although Apple has made significant leaps with its thin-client model, its cloud offerings have been scant, particularly when compared to competitors like Google. The AppStore is a step in the right direction, but if Apple hopes to move away from entertainment provisions alone to remain competitive in the industry it’s rumored move to put together its own cloud platform could certainly shake up the industry. It’s been difficult to ascertain if this is just hearsay or if it’s pure fact, but there’s very likely some element of truth in the buzz. The signs are emerging; after all, Apple did announce last year that it was building a massive datacenter in Maiden, North Carolina but the question was then (and certainly is now) what are they going to house? Apple might be an emerging player–a speculation that would make perfect sense given the fact that almost other major tech company has its hands in the cloud in one way or another.
