Department of Defense data keeps getting bigger and when one tallies up all of the sub-agencies with their own small mountains of data to cull, the amount of processing, storage and lack of efficiency mounts. This week the Association for Enterprise Information 2010 DoD Enterprise Architecture Conference addressed the possibilities that could be realized by a large-scale shift to the cloud for non-classified data. However, the IT missions are mixed and disorganized at this point, making it difficult for the DoD to realize this potential boon for its operations and overall efficiency–cost and otherwise. If some of these hurdles could be overcome the DoD could be a trailblazer for other large agencies in the public sector, not to mention for enterprise as well. After all, if it’s good enough for the DoD, it’s good enough for “me”.
