There’s been some speculation lately that cloud is the next metaphorical ‘killer app” for R&D as more sectors jump on board with private and hybrid clouds to manage select workloads in the “infinite” space of the great cloud. Cloud offers R&D more than simply the ability to burst out for maximum compute power, of course as it is also seen as a useful tool for collaboration on the grand scale. With some of the longest product cycles in any market, pharmaceutical R&D is constantly looking for ways to maximize efficiency and speed new product to market. It is no surprise that that the life sciences are looking to the cloud and enterprise search but as of now, this is still an opportunity for R&D that’s in its infancy. There are valid, positive case studies for harnessing the power of cloud computing in this industry and there is great potential for exponential growth if this market share can be further developed and more life sciences companies can begin to step outside of their traditional IT structures.
