NASA is eager to step outside the testing phase of cloud to push forward the capacity and use of the Nebula cloud computing environment. NASA is one of the first large-scale government agencies to move into the cloud, first in 2007 with the testing rounds and now, it seems anyway, with the real deal–at least according to NASA’s CIO, Linda Cureton. Use of NASA during the testing period has actually been rather extensive as the agency has hosted many of its public projects in its cloud, including several of the images of Mars. Shortly thereafter, other government agencies began to use the Nebula cloud for various non-security-headache-related (of course) projects. It remains to be seen when the much-anticipated apps.gov service will emerge but at the Gov 2.0 expo this week the agency made several announcements about expanding the use of the Nebula cloud for NASA engineers and beyond.
