As more government agencies take advantage of the still-experimental Nebula cloud from NASA due to overall success, there are still some issues that need to be address before broader adoption occurs, including the matter of cloud monitoring. In an inteview with Federal Talk Radio, NASA’s CIO Jerry Davis stated that while cloud has benefitted the agency, monitoring is still something that needs to be addressed in full. Davis stated, “We do see legislation coming forward that talks about automated continuous monitoring of contractor systems, and maybe those that you don’t own but that are processing your data…we know that’s a significant gap for us, but we are also working on a security strategy on how we mitigate that.” The federal government and its handling of monitoring could set the stage not only for other agencies looking to the cloud to cut costs and handle their massive data requirements in a scalable manner, but for large-scale enterprises as well. Any movement on this topic, especially in terms of the legislation that might follow might mean big changes for providers and end users alike.
