Hewlett-Packard is accelerating the migration of its data centre business towards a more automated, cloud-centred model with ambitious firing, hiring and spending plans. The company has announced a US$1 billion investment programme to further streamline the sprawling data centre business it acquired when it purchased EDS in 2008. That process will involve cutting 9,000 existing jobs at the hands-on system administrator end of things (since the separate systems will be virtualised) but adding 6,000 new workers skilled in sales and service delivery.
