Cloud storage does present some security challenges, especially for those who have sensitive data that they are hesitant about sending outside of the firewall, however there are often at least some controls in place to prevent cloud storage from becoming a Wild West. Among the top concerns are data leakage in the multitenant environment and concerns about sharing storage hardware and placing data in the hands of a vendor—outside of one’s direct control. Also of concern are cloud credentials and key management, not to mention the valid fear of general snooping. Coupled with the fact the security can influence performance, it is difficult to say that cloud storage is not without problems. Still, a number of vendors are working to better manage and confine data in cloud storage, including Nasuni among others.
