With funding from AFOSR’s Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative, researchers at the University of Texas in Dallas are looking for new ways to maintain security requirements and alleviate privacy concerns in the cloud. The interdisciplinary team, which includes members from the school’s departments of Management in the School of Economics, Policy and Political Sciences, has evaluated existing concerns and come up with the guiding philosophy that with the right economic incentives, security tools and practices can be developed. The team has employed new security programming that is inserted directly into underlying software that monitors for intrusions and encrypts sensitive data without accessing encryption keys. They are also using Chinese Wall, which refers to a set of policies that grants information access selectively among other experimental measures.
