In a collaborative effort that has culminated in a software project called Stratus Lab, researchers from six European organizations have gathered 2.3 million in funding to enhance distributed computing infrastructures, including the European Grid Infrastructure (ECI) to find new ways to consolidate computing resources to lend to researchers and education institutions. This “enhancement” seeks to integrate cloud and grid technologies as linking the two would result in dramatic availability of resources. StratusLab will bring an open source cloud paradigm to existing and newly-developed grid sites and will integrate OpenNebula, which is an open source toolkit for cloud computing that is already in use in several grid and HPC projects.
