One of the cloud predictions that is most difficult to issue with is the dissipation of the term “cloud” itself from IT lexicon. Some might argue that we’ve reached the saturation point already, particularly now that vendors are slapping the “cloud” sticker on any product that is in some way available as a service–even if the cloud is not really the best moniker. Others are open to debate including the concepts that all applications will eventually move to the cloud and that platform-as-a-service will take over SaaS as the dominant model for smaller enterprises. Other predictions that are included in John Soat’s top five already appear to be unfolding including the suggetion that private clouds will be norm, especially since some of the security and compliance issues surrounding full adoption of public clouds are too hairy to even imagine finding a way to overcome at this point. Interestingly, one prediction is that hybrid clouds will “dominate enterprise IT architectures” which is also based on an existing trend that has been so sweeping it makes this prediction a practical shoo-in.
