Some have suggested that private clouds are starting to look much more like traditional datacenters, which calls to question what the essential differences are–a question that is made more complicated by the fact that the definitions given by vendors peddling cloud storage can be a bit tricky to maneuver. There are hybrid storage solutions such as those offered by Nasuni or Nirvanix that link to the public cloud or more “traditional” pay-per-use models for private cloud storage such as that announced recently by Hitachi. As Rick Vanover notes, “unstructured data is a boon for migration to the cloud, whether it is a private or public cloud storage solution…unstructured data is the perfect private cloud candidate in a sense because it is a large collection that can logically be moved via automation quite easily.” With this in mind, we will keep an eye out for trends indicating that enterprises are attracted by the per-per-use model for data that stays within the company’s walls.
