With SC13 in Denver, Colorado, starting to wind down, this mostly-volunteer organization is looking ahead to SC14, where the conference will reprise its SC10 venue: New Orleans. The theme for next year’s show is HPC Matters.
So why does HPC matter? We can get carried away with visions of big iron and unlimited FLOPS, but as always it comes back to the applications.
In the words of our committed SC planners: “HPC is helping to solve our hardest problems in the world. Innovations from our community have far reaching impact in every corner of science, all the way to investment banking, in the discovery of new drugs, to the precise prediction of the next superstorm. For more than two decades, the SC Conference has been the place to build and share the innovations that are making these life-changing discoveries possible.”
As a prologue to next year’s gathering, SC has created a video that explores the true meaning of HPC, which is so much more than high-performance – it’s “seeing structure in the chaos, signals in the noise and unlocking radical innovations that are revolutionizing science, reinventing economies and making our world a safer place, so we can thrive again.”
As part of its HPC Matters communications campaign, SC is inviting community members to share their thoughts, visions and experiences with HPC and why it matters. Interested parties are welcome to upload a one-minute, or less, video to the SC14 YouTube Channel and make sure to tag the video with “#HPCmatters”.
The top two videos with the most “likes” by August 1, 2014, will receive a complimentary SC14 registration and other prizes to be announced. According to the contest rules, only one individual per video is eligible to win the competition.
