In our third and final video from the HPC User Forum panel (The Who-What-When of Getting Applications Ready to Run On, And Across, Office of Science Next-Gen Leadership Computing Systems), Tim Williams dives into the Early Science Program (ESP) being ramped up at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF).
Williams, the ESP manager, noted the current ALCF-3 ESP in support of the Aurora (due ~2018, 180 petaflops) and Theta (due mid-2016, >8.5 petaflops) supercomputers is patterned after the earlier ESP effort to support Mira. He said that program delivered substantial benefits, among them: technical reports on code porting and tuning; two open community workshops (science and technology); synergy with tools and libraries project; and a stable production platform (problems shaken out).
The ALCF-3 ESP calls for 10 Aurora projects and six Theta projects. Target areas and selection criteria are shown below.
ESP Projects | |
Proposal (area guidelines) | Selection (criteria) |
INCITE-lite | Computational readiness review |
Ambitious targeted science calculation | Science impact review |
Parallel performance | Appropriate team (developers) |
Development needed * Porting and tuning for Theta/Aurora * New algorithms/physics |
Projects span wide range of * Scientific domains * Algorithms/numerical methods |
The open call for proposals for Theta early science is expected to be announced soon. More information is available here.
