Altair is offering a full core open-source version of PBS Professional®, with the goal of helping to accelerate discovery and innovation enabled by high-performance computing.
This move is intended to nurture an environment of collaboration where the community can combine efforts and focus on solving common challenges in HPC job scheduling and workload management, such as scaling up to exascale, reducing energy use, managing for resilience, and improving security. By working together on a common solution, more resources can be applied, delivery can be accelerated, and quality can be improved. The solution can be done once and shared, improving things for the entire HPC community.
Public and private sector researchers, scientists, and engineers all depend on HPC. The difference in collaborative ability is stark, however. At universities and national labs HPC community members are encouraged to follow their natural tendencies for collaboration with peers outside of their walls. In the private sector the same dedicated intensity toward pushing edges is there, but given the necessities of competition there are barriers to collaboration and an epidemic of re-invention.
As a result, the rate of innovation in HPC is unnecessarily slowed down as the flow of what should be common tools and practices is choked by the realities of divergent forks and commercial pressures. Altair recognizes a tremendous opportunity to stop the duplication of efforts on what should be basic building blocks of HPC, and instead allow truly unique and differentiated work to serve as competitive advantages with the entire community performing at a much higher level.
HPC will continue helping the world be a better place, including providing significant economic opportunities, in large extent at a pace commensurate with global capabilities of HPC. Just as having all of humanity able to access the internet at the fastest and most economically expedient speeds possible is arguably a core tenet of global economic growth, so is having the best high performance computing solutions available to everyone. Few would argue that opportunities to make money on the internet would be better if the thing just didn’t work so well. There is plenty of room for innovation on the platform of what has become a planetary utility.
As the wasted energies currently being spent re-implementing the same old capabilities again and again are eliminated, it will be possible to advance the state-of-the-art in HPC and Altair is clearly positioned to help its PBS Professional customers and community do that with a suite of commercial products complementary to the open source code that improves productivity and efficiency.
- Policy: optimizes resource use to meet enterprise goals
- Speed: supports millions of jobs per day
- Scale: scales to tens of thousands of nodes
- Resilience: detects and mitigates faults and failures
- Power: manages power use and energy consumption
With a goal of openness and inclusiveness, Altair looks forward to participating in the advancement of HPC to achieve exascale computing levels through a closer community and commercial collaboration.
