In this monthly feature, we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest career developments for individuals in the high performance computing community. Whether it’s a promotion, new company hire, or even an accolade, we’ve got the details. Check in each month for an updated list and you may even come across someone you know, or better yet, yourself!
Anwar Osseyran and Sergi Girona
Anwar Osseyran has been elected Chair of the PRACE Council. He has been active in the HPC community for many years and his resume includes Managing Director at SURFsara, Professor of Business Analytics and Computer Science at the University of Amsterdam, and he is also a member of the Executive Board at SURF.
PRACE has also elected Sergi Girona as the Council’s Vice-Chair. Girona is Barcelona Supercomputing Center’s Operations Director. He has an extensive history dating back to 2010 with PRACE and some of his past positions include Managing Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors, PRACE AISBL.
“In the past two years, we have worked hard to develop a new business model for to make the next phase of PRACE sustainable. The Netherlands have played a key role in this process, and this was reason for the Hosting Members to break with tradition and ask for a Dutch candidate for the position of Chair of the PRACE Council,” said Osseyran. “My aim as a Vice-Chair is to continue positioning PRACE and its services in Europe, in the global HPC ecosystem, as well as to align with the priorities defined by the Chair of the PRACE Council,” added Girona.
Jason Anderson
Jason Anderson, HPC Systems Administrator for the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, has been elected President of the Large Tape Users Group (LTUG), a branch of the Independent Oracle Users Group. In this position, he will plan and organize the group’s annual spring conference, but until then, he will perform administrative duties. Anderson will serve a 2-year term.
“We already partner with Oracle to help them test new firmware, which can potentially help find bugs that might have caused production issues down the road. The fact that we hold active roles in the user group both improves the company’s product and further solidifies our partnership,” he said.
Gary Grider
Los Alamos National Laboratory has honored Gary Grider with the 2015 Richard P. Feynman Innovation Prize for his national leadership in developing cutting-edge HPC strategies. Grider is the HPC Division Leader at the Lab. He is currently designing the MarFS storage system.
“Gary was a key contributor to two of the three dominant parallel clustered file systems in use today,” said Duncan McBranch, CTO at Los Alamos National Laboratory. “His development of the Parallel Log-Structured File System (PLFS) and the concept of a Burst Buffer directly impacts the performance of the Trinity machine, our premier supercomputer for modeling and simulation.”
Mike Bernhardt
Mike Bernhardt has been named Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Communications Manager where he will work as the communications lead for their Exascale Computing Project. He has over 30 years of HPC and high tech experience and spent the last few years of his career as a member of Intel’s Technical Computing Group as a Community Evangelist. We were also lucky enough to have him on our team at Tabor Communications in the past. Good luck at ORNL, Mike!
