William Camp

William Camp has been awarded the 2016 IEEE Computer Society Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award for his many years of leadership in the HPC community along with his part in developing the Red Storm supercomputer. The award recognizes innovative contributions to HPC systems that best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray.

Camp is Director Emeritus at Sandia National Laboratories and previously served as Director, CCIM at the Lab. He spent four years at Intel as the company’s chief architect and scientist for HPC where he directed Intel’s Exascale research and development efforts. Camp also spent a few years at Cray where he served as the senior director of applications technologies.

William Gropp

William Gropp has been awarded the 2016 ACM/IEEE Computer Science Ken Kennedy Award for his contributions to the programmability of high-performance parallel and distributed computers. The award was created in memory of Ken Kennedy, one of the world’s foremost experts on HPC.

Gropp is a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was also recently named Acting Director of the NCSA, an appointment we reported on back in September. Gropp is also well known for his contributions to the development of the MPICH implementation of the Message Passing Interface (MPI).

Vipin Kumar

Vipin Kumar has received the 2016 IEEE Computer Society Sidney Fernbach Award for his work on understanding scalability and highly-scalable algorithms for graph partitioning, sparse linear systems, and data mining. The award is given for outstanding contributions in the application of high performance computers using innovative approaches.

Kumar is a Regents Professor at the University of Minnesota. He is also the Lead PI of the $10 million NSF-funded project, “Understanding Climate Change – A Data Driven Approach.”

Jorge Titinger

Jorge Titinger, President and CEO of SGI, has been named to the 2016 HITEC 100. This list recognizes 100 of the most influential Hispanic professionals in the IT industry and has been doing so since 2008. Titinger was also named to the 2015 HITEC 100.

“I’m honored to be once again recognized among the amazing group of leaders in the IT industry who continue to inspire professionals in the Hispanic community to overcome challenges and put forth exceptional work and innovation,” said Titinger. “HITEC aims to build strong leaders and leadership teams in our evolving technology-centric world, and I mirror this mission with my own team at SGI, promoting a culture of diversity and recognizing excellence.”

Bryan Catanzaro

Bryan Catanzaro has joined NVIDIA as the vice president of applied deep learning research. He started off as an intern at NVIDIA while studying at UC Berkeley and was eventually hired as a research scientist. He then moved on to Baidu as a senior researcher and held that position until this recent appointment at NVIDIA.

Julian Borrill

Julian Borrill has received NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal. He received the award for conceiving and implementing the mission-critical HPC system for Planck data analysis. Borrill is the leader of the Computational Cosmology Center at LBNL and has been using computing resources to support the Planck satellite mission for the past 15 years. He is also a senior research physicist at the Space Sciences Lab at UC Berkeley.

“Although this is an individual award, it ultimately reflects the outstanding contributions of many people in CRD and NERSC over many years, as well as the long-standing support for Planck at NERSC from HEP and Berkeley Lab management,” Borrill said.
