Serge Bogaerts
Serge Bogaerts has joined PRACE as Managing Director. In this role, he will support the transition to PRACE 2. Bogaerts has spent the bulk of his career with CENAERO and most recently served as HPC & Infrastructure Manager for the company. Due to his time as PRACE Council Secretary and Delegate for Belgium, we expect his transition to be a simple one.
“PRACE is currently in a transition phase to a new funding and governance model. This phase is a stepping stone towards a persistent and sustainable PRACE Research Infrastructure, and I am very much looking forward to being deeply involved in the implementation of this new phase as well as in the further development of PRACE in supporting European excellence in Science and Innovation,” said Bogaerts.
Julia Phillips
President Obama has appointed Julia Phillips to the National Science Board of the National Science Foundation. Phillips spent many years of her career at Sandia National Laboratories where she started off as Director of Physical, Chemical & Nano Sciences. She eventually took over as the Lab’s Director and also served as Vice President and CTO before retiring in 2015. According to Sandia, she will focus on keeping the United States at the forefront of science and engineering. Her appointment is for six years.
“When you look at the list of past and present members of the National Science Board, it feels like a who’s who of people in science and engineering who have made contributions in personal research and in policy. I am honored to be among them,” said Phillips.
Tjerk Straatsma
Tjerk Straatsma has been named an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellow. He is the lead of the Scientific Computing Group in the Center for Computational Sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and was selected by the AAAS Council for “distinguished contributions in the field of computational science, particularly for the development, efficient implementation and application of advanced chemical physics modeling and simulation methods.”
In addition to Straatsma, six other ORNL researchers were named AAAS fellows. That list can be found here.
Seyong Lee
Seyong Lee has been honored with the IEEE Computer Society TCHPC Award for Excellence for Early Career Researchers in High Performance Computing. The award recognizes those who have made significant contributions in the HPC industry within five years of receiving their doctorate. Lee is a computer scientist in the Future Technologies Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University.
Kirk Skaugen
Kirk Skaugen has been named President of Lenovo’s Data Center Group. In this role, he will be responsible for growing Lenovo’s global server, storage, and networking footprint. Prior to the appointment, Skaugen worked at Intel where he held a variety of different positions over the years, most recently as the senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group (CCG).
